The Very Hungry Caterpillar: Spring Bulletin Board Idea for Your Library or Classroom

A library bulletin board for our Children’s Room inspired by Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar

Materials used: Poster board, acrylic paint, and foam brushes.

How I made it: First I cut his giant caterpillar body out of poster board. I used the same green colored poster board for his body and a piece of red poster board for his face. I used brown for his feet, yellow for the sun, and a light blue color for his antennae. I didn’t worry about tracing too much because if you look at the book, the shapes are all unique and abstract!

Then it was time for the fun part. The painting! I tried to make each piece look a little different, and I painted rather haphazardly because in the book, the brush strokes go in all different directions. For his body, I used green, blue, white, yellow, and brown paint. I mixed the colors a lot and switched it up for each piece. Also, I painted the sun using yellow and orange paint and tried my best to make it look like the smiley sun in the book. I just went for it without overthinking it. You definitely don’t need an art background to accomplish this, that’s for sure! šŸ™‚

Lastly, I cut out the letters using our Ellison machine and voila! The Bulletin Board Very Hungry Caterpillar was born! I saw other boards featuring the cute caterpillar with phrases like “Hungry for Knowledge,” so we changed it to “Hungry for a Good Book” to fit the library aesthetic.

Final thoughts: Overall, I’m pretty happy with how he came out! He’s very big, so ya can’t miss him. If I were to do it again, I think I’d add more yellow to outline his body like it’s done in the book. Also, I’d give more thought about where I’d place the letters. By the time I got everything up there, there was practically no space for the words. Whoops!

That’s all for now! Thanks for reading, friends. Let me know if you’ve worked on any fun bulletin boards recently!
